Folio 52r

Book 2 opens with the messages to the seven churches of Asia. The composition is almost always the same: the angel and St. John in front of each of the churches, usually identified by means of an architectural structure with one, two or three arches. The Silos Beatus however is enhanced by the addition of angels, male heads, animals and animal heads forming the respective initial of the text. It is however noteworthy, as pointed out by M. Mentré, that an image is provided for each of the messages – a detail true in every instance. This serves as the visual stay for the symbolism of the Church as a unit in the midst of the diversity of the seven churches of Asia.
