Above, two of the soldiers who have arrested Jesus hold him by the shoulders and lead him, dressed in a simple tunic and with his hands tied, before Pilate (Matt. 27:2), who questions him (Matt. 27:11). The Governor sits majestically at the top of a flight of steps with a cushion under his feet. It appears that the small character dressed in a yellow garment decorated with trefoils has taken advantage of the situation to accuse Jesus. Behind Jesus is a very dense crowd of helmeted soldiers, above whom is a man holding a hollow circular dish. On the other side, on the steps leading to Pilate's throne, apparently kneeling, is a Pharisee, richly dressed in a blue cloak and a pointed red hat with a white turn-up. Standing behind him are dignitaries, all wearing hats.
In the miniature below, Jesus, already crowned with thorns and tied to a post, undressed apart from a loincloth, is being scourged (Matt. 27:26) by two soldiers wielding whips (wooden handles with straps attached, as far as we can see), a Roman ordeal that preceded crucifixion, from whence come the numerous traces of blood upon Christ's body. The Dove of the Holy Spirit, no longer with wings outspread, appears between the two miniatures in the capital D at the start of the office, Deus, in adiutorium meum intende . . .
