This plant grows in meadows throughout Europe, Asia, and northern Africa. It is also native mainly in North America and Australia. It is used to relieve chronic bronchitis on account of its mucilage content. It also contains tannins, glycosides, especially aucubin, coumarin, flavonoids and mineral salts. It has anti-inflammatory properties, mainly because of its aucubin content which is effective against allergies. It is also astringent and antiseptic. It was used to cure acne and gout, to staunch bleeding, to remedy spider veins and haemorrhoids, and also as a healing agent and to relieve insect bites. Its seeds contain mucilages and are therefore used to remedy constipation.
