Cannibalism in Sumatra, f. 107r

Back

I departed from this island and headed south until I reached a large island called Dondin, which is the filthiest island imaginable. The inhabitants are detestable men, as they eat raw meat and all kinds of unimaginable filth. They follow a barbaric custom: the father eats the son, the wife eats the husband, and the husband eats the wife. This is how it works: when a father falls ill, the son consults an astrologer, who is actually a priest, and asks, "Sir, consult our god to see if my father can recover from this illness or if he is destined to die."

Then, the priest and the sick man's son stand before an idol of gold and silver, pray, and say, "Lord, you are our god, we honor you and ask for your guidance: this man is gravely ill. Will he recover, or is he destined to die?" The demon, speaking through the idol, replies, "Your father will not die, but will be healed. You must follow these instructions to cure him."

The son then cares for his father with great devotion until he is fully recovered.

However, if the demon declares that the father must die, the priest goes to the sick man and suffocates him by covering his mouth with a cloth until he dies. After his death, the body is dismembered, and the friends, relatives, and all the performers of the region are invited to a banquet, where they joyfully consume the body, accompanied by songs and music. Nevertheless, the bones are set aside and buried with solemnity. If any relative is not invited to this macabre feast, it is considered a great insult.
