The Book of the Marvels of the World, Marco Polo - Odoric of Pordenone

Palm and sago wine harvest, f. 105r

Back

Not far from this region lies another place called Patin, also known as Malamasini. The king of this land rules over many islands. In this region, there are trees that produce flour, others that give honey and wine, and even trees that yield the most dangerous poison in the world. The only antidote to this poison is to drink human excrement diluted in water, which will fully cure the person who has ingested it.

The trees that produce flour do so in the following way: large, though not particularly tall, these trees are struck with an axe near the roots. From the cut flows a glue-like liquid, which is collected in leaf sacks and left to dry in the sun for 15 days. After this period, the liquid turns into flour. This flour is then soaked in seawater for two days, followed by rinsing in fresh water, resulting in the finest paste in the world. With this paste, one can make anything, from food to an excellent bread, which I, Friar Odorico, had the chance to eat. Although the bread is beautiful on the outside, it is rather black on the inside. I witnessed all of this firsthand.
